11 kidnapped NYSC members have been rescued by security agencies in Kogi State.
Spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Afusat, confirmed to the media that a joint rescue operation led to the liberation of 11 of Wednesday’s kidnapping along the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He also commented that the operation is still ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and that those already rescued have been accordingly debriefed and allowed to proceed on their journey.
The rescue operation and confirmation by the State Command follows a widely shared and watched video on social media by one of the relatives of the victims calling on Nigerians and the Nigerian government to rescue her sister.
In the video, the lady narrated that her sister was on her way to Abuja from Bayelsa State after her NYSC orientation when she and other passengers were attacked, and appealed to Nigerians and the Nigerian Government for help in rescuing them.
This recent kidnapping highlights the growing dangerous nature of some highways in Kogi State. On August 9, some commuters along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu LGA were abducted before a rescue operation led to the liberation of 16 victims.
Police also confirmed on August 28 that Ishaq Yunusa, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State was killed along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area while his travelling companion was abducted into the neighbouring bush by gunmen.
