Iran announced it is reinstating its closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to U.S. continued blockade of the waterway.
Two ships reported that Iranian gunboats fired at them on Saturday following the announcement of the closure.
When asked about the blockade, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Saeed Khatibzadeh said that the Americans had violated the terms of the ceasefire, and so “there will be repercussions for them”.
US Central Command CENTCOM also confirmed that they have turned back 23 ships since the U.S Navy’s own blockading of the Strait on April 13.
The command however refused to comment on the recent actions of Iranian forces to close the strait.
Iran condemned the U.S actions of blockading the Strait of Hormuz as acts of “piracy.”
Meanwhile, the 2 week ceasefire between the U.S and Iran will expire on Wednesday next week. Trump says he will not extend the ceasefire if a deal is not reached by Wednesday.
Despite rumours of scheduled talks for Monday, both sides are yet to confirm the existence of such plans.
Also, pressure continues to mount on President Trump and other actors to find a lasting ceasefire agreement.
Across the world, the economic and humanitarian fallout from the war with Iran has been enormous. Rising fuel prices and cost of commodities are leading factors for an immediate end to the war.
